Dear Joan:

It has been a long time since I saw you last time. How are you going recently? I really miss you so much that I can't wait the reunion with you next week.

Green Island is a lovely place full of passionate tropical atmosphere and stunning natural beauty. At the same time, it is a live history classroom, where cruel jail for political criminals is conserved transforming into a memorial museum. On Green Island, you can explore the abundant natural and cultural treasure, so I debt that you will love it. Nonetheless, it is quite an unfortune that it is likely to be raining on July 11 and 12. But, don't feel-bad at all. I have some wonderful indoor places to bring to, such as the Prehistorical Museum. As for July 13 and 14, the last two days of your staying in Taiwan, I decide to give you a delicacy tour, bringing you to sample all the scrumptious traditional food in Taiwan.

Here are some suggestions about what you should bring with you on your trip.  Take your swimming suites, for we will have many chance to play water in Green Island, and if you want, you can also go snorkeling. Sun screen is also necessary, for the strong UV radiation in Taiwan’s summer is quite harmful to our health. As for an unbralla, I think you don't need to bring one because it is a little unconvenient to travel with one. I would suggest you buying one after your arrival in Taiwan. The last and the most important thing to prepare is a joyful and chirping heart. Just let go all your stress and enjoy your wonderful journey on this fascinating land.

I have already been looking forward to your visit. I hope that the information beyond can help you in some ways. If you have any questions, don't even hesitate to send an e-mail to me. I will do my best to help you out. In addition, if you have any advice to my plan, tell me direct so that I can make it cater to your needs more.

Be careful on your way and wish you a wonderful journey.

Sincerely,

Chris.

1. Overall, it is a good essay (I would give 17 points over 20), although there are some grammar/spelling mistakes and a few sentences are not very smooth.

2. You need to be careful in formatting a letter: you should use 'Dear Joan,' rather than 'Dear Joan:'. Here's the correct punctuation: generally, a comma for a personal letter, and a colon for a formal business letter. Besides, to close your letter, you do not need to add the unnecessary '.' after Chris.

3. It's better to use 'met' than 'saw' because 'meet' really means you were together at least for a certain period of time, instead of just seeing each other.

4. 'really' and 'so much' are repetitive, thereby making the sentence not so natural.

5. 'bring’ is used too many times in the essay; there are some alternatives, such as 'take', 'show' or else.

6. You should not use Imperative Sentences too often, or at least add 'please' before the verb to sound better.

7. I would suggest a nice phrase: 'enjoy sth to its fullest' (尽情享受).

Early detection is key

Early detection can be important. "Hearing impairment may be progressive, and in many cases, irreversible," says Low.

Unfortunately, many hearing-impaired persons postpone consulting a doctor for years after they start noticing problems. This state of denial can carry dire consequences such as depression and social isolation, research has shown. If your parent avoids conversation and social interactions, it could actually be a sign of hearing loss.

If the doctor diagnoses a hearing impairment, your parent will be advised on possible ways to guard against further deterioration and to improve communication with others. The necessity to use a hearing aid will also be evaluated.

Treatments for the hearing-impaired

In some situations, surgical intervention may be more suitable. This includes surgery of the outer and middle ear structures to improve conduction of sound to the inner ear.

Ear implants may also be considered in some patients. For example, a middle ear implant can work in people experiencing either a conductive (related to the external or middle ear) or sensorineural (related to the inner ear) hearing loss.

In people with profound sensori-neural hearing loss due to inner ear damage, a cochlear implant can be considered.

After being fitted with a hearing aid or an implant, your parent will need to get adjusted to his or her new hearing environment. "With time and patience, the person tends to notice significant hearing benefit," says Low.

How to talk to your doctor about premature ejaculation

How to talk to your doctor about premature ejaculation
By Health Xchange | Fit to Post Health – Wed, Sep 28, 2011....tweet21Share1EmailPrint.....

Talking about premature ejaculation is not easy.

Premature ejaculation is more common than erectile dysfunction, but it is less talked about because there wasn't any medicine readily available until recently.

The situation changed in March this year with the launch of Priligy, a pill able to prolong the length of intercourse up to three times.

So men now have an option for premature ejaculation (PE), but they must be willing to discuss their problem with a medical practitioner. Not necessarily an easy task, is it?

We asked Dr Lim Kok Bin, visiting consultant at Singapore General Hospital's Department of Urology, for advice on how to broach the delicate topic whilst at the doctor's office.

Most men won't talk about premature ejaculation

Some 77 per cent of Singaporean men with PE have never mentioned their problem to a doctor, according to the Premature Ejaculation Prevalence and Attitudes (PEPA) survey.

"Men are more likely to discuss erectile dysfunction, because of the awareness effort put in by drug companies over the last decade," says Dr Lim, who also practises at Raffles Hospital's UroRenal Centre.

What's holding most men back? The previous lack of effective treatment for PE and, of course, the stigma, answers Dr Lim. Also, "most men with PE tend to have it since young. As their problem does not stop them from impregnating their partner — unlike erectile dysfunction — they may not feel the urgency to address the issue."

Related article: What is erectile dysfunction?

Currently, a number of men have come forward because of the new drug Priligy. "About half of my PE patients come out of their own accord; the other half is driven by their partner," mentions Dr Lim.

How to talk to your doctor if you suffer from premature ejaculation:

•Bring up the topic right at the beginning of the visit. Don't worry about using the right "medical" terms.
•Find a Premature Ejaculation Questionnaire online, print the results and take them with you. Alternatively, you could print some relevant article - like this one - to show your doctor.
•If it helps, you can readily admit your discomfort by saying: "It's a bit embarrassing, but I'd like to talk about a sexual problem."
•Take your partner along for support or help in answering the questions you may be asked.
•Have a list of the conditions you are treated for or had in the past. Include your current medications and any recent health check results.
•Rest assured that your physician has heard it all before. It's virtually impossible to shock a doctor.
If anything, many doctors in Singapore have worked and received medical training in Western countries, where male patients are more forthcoming. "Western men will be frank and provide information about whether they are heterosexual, homosexual or even bisexual," says Dr Lim, who was trained in the UK and Canada.

3 little known habits that can help prevent acne

I am certainly not a "beautician" and know next to nothing about the latest fashion trends. However I do know that good skin is always attractive, and is always in fashion.

One of the pleasant "side effects" of good health is good skin. The skin is a reflection of what is going on inside. So fix it from the inside.

Most creams and lotions only work on symptoms and don't hit the root causes of acne. Either you adapt to them and keep needing more and more, or they dry out your skin and make it less smooth. Or both!

Anti-biotics are another common "solution" but they damage the good bacteria as well, causing side effects like poor digestion. So we can't take these for a long period either.

While every case is different, and acne has many possible causes, good habits will help you increase your chance of clearing up your skin.

In fact, many of our clients report improved skin conditions within a few weeks of starting these health building habits. So here are 3 things that build health and bust pimples. The principles are simple - reduce the factors that cause acne, and we are likely to be successful.

1. Build digestive tract health

Your digestive system is your body's first line of defense against bacteria. To make it strong we must not keep stressing it. The foods that cause the most problems are:

.Dairy - Because milk boosts inflammation and insulin production, both acne increasing factors
Wheat - Gluten intolerance which is quite common, causes damage to the gut.
Alcohol - Depletes nutrients which help fight acne. Primarily Zinc (which I have talked about here)
.Get rid of all the items above for 6 weeks and see what happens. I know dairy is well marketed but if you are of Asian descent, you are likely intolerant of it.

2. Watch those blood sugar levels

Processed foods high in refined carbohydrates and sugar are a problem. They digest quickly and cause high blood sugar. This means high insulin, and excess insulin signals your body to grow excess new cells, like pimples.

So, eat unprocessed foods, healthy meats and fats, and lots of veggies.

3. Put out the flames

Stress, processed food, a damaged digestive tract, and many other factors increase inflammation in your body. And acne is an inflammatory condition. So you need to have habits that reduce inflammation. Here are foods and nutrients that can help you.

.Omega-3 fats - For acne, the EPA portion of the omega-3s is more important because it helps with inflammation. At least 1-2g of EPA (check your label!) per day is required and more would probably be good for you.
Pro-Biotics and coconut oil - will help improve the good/bad bacteria balance in your gut. Take a capsule after breakfast and at dinner. And a tablespoon of coconut oil along with it.
Spices - Things like cinnamon powder (not the stuff mixed with sugar!), cur-cumin from turmeric, and garlic can help with blood sugar management and inflammation.
Vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium are also very important for their anti-oxidant, skin repairing properties.
Zinc - as usual is critical for its hormone balancing properties.
.When it comes to supplements, spend money on good ones. Because of the dis-regulation of the supplement industry, it is hard to know which brands to trust. Some brands which I have found to be excellent in practice are Poliquin, Metagenics, Biotics Research, and Life Extension Formulas. The Poliquin site and the Life Extension site also have great information on nutrition and health.

The great thing is that all these factors above not only improve acne, they improve health!

What to do if your parent is hard of hearing

A common joke goes: "Three old guys are out for walk. The first one says, 'Windy, isn't it?' The second one says, 'No, it's not Wednesday, its Thursday!' The third one says, 'I'm thirsty too! Let's go for a drink.'"

In real life, this funny scenario is likely to play out more and more often here, as hearing impairment is related to age, and Singapore is the fastest ageing country in Asia after Japan.

"Hearing loss is common in the elderly; about one in three people older than 60 and half of those older than 85 are significantly hearing impaired," says associate professor Low Wong Kein, senior consultant and director of the Centre for Hearing and Ear Implants at Singapore General Hospital.

Apart from ageing, hearing loss has many other possible causes. Acute or prolonged exposure to noise can cause damage to the cochlea, the body's main and innermost hearing organ.

Could it be simple earwax?

Certain medications may also be culprits. For instance, Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner is said to be going deaf due to his extensive use of Viagra. Antibiotics, diuretics and cancer drugs are more common examples of drugs that can impact auditory function.

How much sunlight do you need

"Singapura oh Singapura. Sunny island, set in the sea."

Those are the words of a old-time song about Singapore. Being on the equator, there are some great benefits like -- lots of sunshine! There are also some problems like -- lots of sunshine!

To some, sunshine is tan giving, energy boosting and refreshing.

To others, sunlight is wrinkle-causing, cancer-risking, and sunburn-inducing.

So what is it? Here are some tips to help you maximise your benefits from sunlight without the "side effects".

Tip 1: You NEED sunlight. The sun helps us produce vitamin D in its best possible form. I recommend vitamin D to many of my personal training and fitness bootcamp clients because it is a wonderful nutrient that has great benefits for you.

•Better immune system health to prevent annoyances like the flu
•Fewer allergies and autoimmune diseases because vitamin D helps to make sure your own immune system does not attack your body with "friendly fire"
•Fat burning because it helps your thyroid to boost your metabolism
•Reduced risk of diabetes because of better blood sugar management
•Reduced risk of most cancers because vitamin D presses the "self destruct" button of cancer cells called "tumour necrosis factor alpha"
•Muscle building because vitamin D improves testosterone levels naturally
An interesting point is that EVERY kind of tissue in our body has vitamin D receptors. That means that correct vitamin D levels boost ALL areas of health.

The best way to get vitamin D is by exposing yourself to sunlight. Even the best quality supplemental vitamin D is not as good as the vitamin D produced in our own bodies when we are exposed to sunlight.

In fact, Dr. Michael Hollick, probably the world's No. 1 expert on vitamin D, has researched and found out that vitamin D produced from skin exposure to sunlight lasts longer (2x or more) in our blood as when it is taken as a supplement.

How to identify and deal with depression

.........How to identify and deal with depression
By ttsh_hospital | Fit to Post Health – Sun, Oct 9, 2011....tweet25Share1EmailPrint.....

Watch out for signs of depression. (Getty Images)

By Yang Su-Yin

Does the following sound familiar to you?

•"I've lost my appetite."
•"I can't sleep."
•" I don't know why I feel like crying all the time."
•"I've lost interest"
•"I don't feel like doing anything."
•"Life is meaningless, what's there to live for?"
Such thoughts may be suggestive of depression. Depression rarely creeps up on you without reason. Often, depression is a result of some imbalance in life, a signal that there are areas in your life that need to be managed and not ignored.

If you have been constantly feeling low and experiencing some or all of the symptoms above, it is appropriate to seek professional medical help. This is especially so if thoughts of death or suicide are present. Do not self-diagnose or self-manage without speaking to your doctor first. Following your doctor's consult, below are some self-management tips that you can try at home.

Don't be embarrassed if you need to seek help for your depression. There are professionals out there that can give you support to start living a better life. Remember you are worth it!
Set a routine for yourself and include some basic level of activity throughout the day. This is important to give your life a daily purpose.
Create a daily motto for yourself. This will be your day's inspiration especially when feeling down. Some examples would be: "Life's too short to worry about everything", "Let loose and live", and "It is another beautiful day".
Choose to engage in an activity that you would normally enjoy even if you don't want to do it. This is to prevent you from losing sense of yourself and thus reducing your activity level to a minimal.
Try a new activity that you can do with a group of friends or if you prefer, by yourself. Cultivate new interests that will keep you going.
Rally social support. It is important to reach out to your family and friends around you who can walk you through this rough patch. Turning them away will cause you more harm than good. You need not walk this journey alone.
Don't avoid the feeling of depression. The harder you try to suppress or control depression, the more depressed you might get. Avoidance is not the way but acknowledgement and acceptance will be more helpful to see you through.
Sufficient rest and regular meals are also needed to help with your recovery. Without enough rest and a proper diet; you will not have the energy and the mental capacity to fight this battle.
Use positive self-talk. Believe that your life is worth it and you are worthy as a person no matter what your mind tells you.
Re-look, re-think and re-set your life's goals. Dream again to find that purpose and meaning in your life that will motivate you to live a more fulfilled life.
Be thankful and contented with what you have
